Between the leaves June saw Morana gliding eerily towards her. She was floating, her silver slippers hovering inches above the ground, while the long train of her white dress slithered over the bracken and dried leaves. Her posture had changed, and her body seemed more angular: tensed and ready to strike. Her face was tighter, crueler, and her expression shrewd as her wide black eyes scanned the forest, searching.
This was a far different creature than the beautiful woman who helped June off the road. She looked older, not in age but in time, like an ancient predator June had seen pictures of in her natural history books. A sabre-toothed tiger or a primordial crocodile.
